Caffè Dello Sport recently announced that a new site is “coming soon” to 973 Saratoga St in Orient Heights, right next to the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home.
A North End fixture for over three decades, the original cafe first opened across the road from its current Hanover St spot.
Known for its full espresso bar and vibrant atmosphere, Caffè Dello Sport offers locals a “little taste of Italy.” Visitors come for the coffee, pastries, gelato, paninis, and libations, and stay to watch calcio (soccer) matches from around the globe.
Owner Mivan Spencer, who took over the business from his grandfather, Angelo, eight years ago, told East Boston Times that about 70% of the North End menu will carry over to the new location, though alcohol won’t be offered right away.
“This is going to be more coffee house than it is, you know, European bar,” he said.
While an opening date for the East Boston cafe has not yet been set, Spencer mentioned that the property is already zoned as a cafe and that he’s awaiting further feedback from the city. The buildout, he said, should move quickly.
The Mayor’s Press Office told East Boston Times that the property is zoned for mixed-use, allowing restaurants of various sizes. If the application meets all as-of-right requirements, no community meetings will be required.
