Vance Welch—who owns Abby Park and Novara on Adams St—is hoping to open his newest restaurant at the Fruit Center Marketplace. The second-story concept, dubbed Marbella Kitchen & Bar, would take over the former site of The Plate at 10 Bassett St.

While the eatery is still in the early stages of development, Welch is cautiously optimistic about the future of Marbella. “We’re working with the planning board right now because it requires a special permit for the location,” he told What Now Boston.

Because the bar’s late-night hours were initially met with some reluctance from neighbors, Welsh has revised the original proposal. He now plans to offer fewer seats at the bar, an earlier closing time, and a breakfast menu.

“The initial plan didn’t include a breakfast component, but because of the location, we think it’s a good idea,” said Welch. “And I think that there was some demand for it.”

Marbella’s original menu includes a range of classic Meditteranean dishes, including lamb kafta, Gemelli Toscana, and paella, as well as more casual options like burgers and flatbreads.

“We were looking to do a concept like that before this opportunity came around,” Welch explained. “So when it did, that was one of the reasons we chose it. Plus, we know the demographic and we believe they’ll support it.”

A Planning Board meeting is scheduled to take place on January 23, and Welch said he should know more after that. Stay tuned for updates.
